Filling In The Tax Return

The Self Assessment Tax Return is designed to make it easy for the Inland Revenue to quickly enter your details into their computers. The Return is 10 pages long with over 200 tick or number boxes that you must complete if they are appropriate to your circumstances. The only spaces to write any explanations of your figures are on pages 9 and 10 of the form and on the various supplementary pages.

The information that you enter on the form will be used in calculating your tax position so any error may mean that you pay too much or too little tax. If possible, do not enter any estimated figures on the Return. However, if you are getting near to the 31st January deadline and have to use an estimated figure on your Tax Return you should indicate that the figure is estimated and supply the actual figure to the Inland Revenue as soon as possible.

The Inland Revenue sends out a large guide to help you fill in the form, but for some sources of income you may need to ask them for additional Help sheets.
